The Roles

How to apply ›

Under the leadership of the new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christina Slade, Bath Spa University is seeking to enhance its research and will appoint up to ten world-class academics and creative practitioners to promote its ambitions on the international stage.

These appointments will fall into two categories. The first category will be ‘academic’ appointments aimed at maximising the University’s performance in REF 2014. They will build capacity in our present areas of demonstrable research strength (English, History, Art & Design, and Music, which each scored 80% or more 2*, 3* and 4* research in RAE 2008); they will generate additional external income in support of our research activities, and will foreground the quality of our research and academic staff in our distinctive humanities and arts provision.

The second category of appointments is designed to cut a deep and distinctive niche in the area of research where we believe we have the highest profile and quality in terms of research and international recognition: Creative Writing. We seek to appoint up to 5 prize winning, renowned novelists or writers with international readerships and reputations. These new Professors will be global ambassadors for the University: helping to build a world-wide reputation which will maintain and enhance the University’s attractiveness to partners across the world for the development of collaborative research projects, staff and student exchanges and jointly validated programmes of study. In short, both categories of appointment will contribute to a twin strategy for improving the University’s research profile: they will optimise our performance in REF 2014, and also build our reputation on the world stage beyond that - in a way which integrates the University’s research strategy with its international ambitions.
